NEW CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY ON TRIAL WITH SCA, PEAB & SWEROCK

At SCA Wood’s sawmill in Tunadal, Sundsvall, a unique test is taking shape. Together with leading partners, we are casting a large-scale concrete floor, reinforced with our graphene-based additive 2Dx® CO-NXT. The goal is to develop durable and frost-resistant industrial concrete with a significantly lower climate impact.

Two of the most important ingredients are produced locally in Sundsvall, which further strengthens the regional innovation ecosystem and reduces transport related emissions.

This is no ordinary test. The floor will be exposed to heavy traffic, wear, and freeze-thaw conditions. As Mattias Jonsson, Peab, noted on site: “Now it’s for real. You’d be hard-pressed to find a tougher test.” His colleague Viktor Grannas, Peab, agreed, calling it “the litmus test for this new technology.”

By demonstrating the strength, durability and climate benefits of concrete enhanced with graphene-based materials in a real-world environment, this project is taking an important step towards more sustainable building materials.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The project will run over the next two years to evaluate how nanotech-reinforced concrete performs in one of the toughest real-world environments imaginable. The project, named “Sustainable concrete floors”, is co-financed by Vinnova, Formas and Energimyndigheten, and is carried out together with SCA, Peab, and Swerock, with the support of Klimatarena Sundsvall.
